The Care Ritual (or Floral Longevity Guide)

There is nothing quite like the moment a fresh bouquet arrives at your door. The scent, the vibrancy, and the immediate lift it brings to a room are unmatched. At Amarilis, we select the highest quality blooms to ensure longevity, but once they are in your home, a little extra care goes a long way.

Here are our top tips for extending the life of your arrangement.

1. The First Cut is Critical Before placing your flowers in water, trim the stems at a 45-degree angle. This angled cut increases the surface area for water absorption and prevents the stem from sitting flat against the bottom of the vase. We recommend re-trimming them every two days to keep the drinking channels open.

2. Water Wisdom Clean water is the secret to fresh flowers. Bacteria build-up in the vase is the number one enemy of longevity. Change the water entirely every two days, and if you notice the water turning cloudy, it’s time for a refresh immediately. Cool (not cold) tap water is perfect for most stems.

3. Location, Location, Location While flowers look beautiful on a sunny windowsill, direct sunlight and heat will cause them to wilt prematurely. Keep your arrangement away from heating vents, direct sun, and even fruit bowls—ripening fruit releases ethylene gas, which can age flowers faster.

4. Prune with Purpose As the days go by, some stems may fade faster than others. Don’t be afraid to remove a wilted bloom to let the others shine. Removing foliage that sits below the water line is also essential to keeping the water clean and clear.

Enjoy the ritual of caring for your blooms—it is a moment of mindfulness in a busy day.
